What this is

Return to the League is an independent editorial index of hotels, grouped into four categories: art hotels, capsule hotels, casino hotels and ice hotels. Every entry is written here, in plain prose, describing what a property is and who it tends to suit.

The categories were chosen because each one asks something different of a building. An art hotel is judged on what it looks like and what it holds. A capsule hotel is judged on how well a very small space has been organised. A casino hotel is a large full-service hotel that also runs a gaming floor. An ice hotel is rebuilt from scratch most years.

How we write it

There are no star ratings here, no reviews, no scores and no booking. We do not take reservations and we are not an agent for any property listed. Descriptions stick to general, durable facts about each hotel — where it is, what kind of building it occupies, how it is organised — rather than to details that change with the season or the week.

Coverage is geographically neutral. A hotel appears because it is a clear example of its category, not because of the country it sits in.
