Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort

Saariselä, Finland

Kakslauttanen spreads across a wide stretch of forest in Finnish Lapland, and it is best understood as several kinds of accommodation on one site. The glass igloos are the year-round element: small domed rooms with heated transparent shells, angled so that guests can watch the sky from bed through the long polar night. Alongside them sit traditional snow igloos, rebuilt each winter and kept a few degrees below freezing, and timber cabins with their own saunas for anyone who would rather sleep warm. Distances between buildings are real distances; this is a resort you cross on foot through deep snow, which is much of its character.
